Character: Rachel Karen Green Friend Type: The spoilt one Occupation (end series 3): Buyer at Bloomingdales Rachel is Monica's roommate and was her best friend at high school. Brought up in the surburbs, she was spoilt to death by her parents and grew up in a protected environment. She was just about to marry her orthodontist fianc Barry, but ran out on him at the altar when she realised that she didn't really love him. She tracked down Monica who she hadn't seen for a while, and moved in with her. Her decision to stand on her own two feet for the first time in he life saw her take a job in Central Perk. She only found out about Ross having a crush on her since their high school days when Chandler inadvertently 'told' her on her birthday. Her relationship with Ross has been on then off then on then off again, mainly down to Ross' stupidity (the female perspective!), however when they are not a couple, you can detect Rachel still has feelings for Ross.

Character: Monica Geller Friend Type: The fussy one Occupation (end Series 3): Chef Monica, apart from being Ross' little sister, was Rachel's best friend at high school, and at one time Phoebe, who she met at college, was her roommate. Her biggest fault is that she is just so fussy about neatness and keeping her life in order - the main thing that drove Phoebe to leave... (eventually) - and is normally the voice of reason to be heard among the gang. When we first encountered Monica, she was working as assistant chef in a rather smart down-town restaurant and since then has been through a number of chefing jobs, including working at the Moondance Diner, before being given a restaurant by her then millionaire boyfriend Pete. As for her troubled love-life - she seems to attract a real variety of men - including a jail-bait, one of her father's friends and, of course, Pete the millionaire! She's had to put up with Ross being the family favourite, and suffering from a weight problem as she grew up.

Character: Phoebe Buffay | Friend Type: The off-beat one Occupation (end series 3): Song Writer, Masseuse and Philosopher Phoebe was once Monica's roommate. She's best described as an off-beat, eternally optimistic folk-singer. She performs most of her work at Central Perk - who could ever forget 'Smelly Cat' or 'The Two of Them Kissed Last Night'. Phoebe's family life has been far from simple. She has a twin sister, Ursula, with whom she doesn't get on very well. Her childhood was unsettled - her father left when she was young, her step-father ended up in prison and her mother killed herself in the kitchen whilst Phoebe was building a snowman in the garden. Later in life, it comes out that she's married a gay guy called Duncan to help him get a green card - but he's not gay and wants a divorce so he could marry the girl he loves! Her taxi-driving Grandmother revealed to her that the pictures of her real father were the pictures that actually came in the frames and her 'real' real father is a pharmacist who lives in upstate New York. Phoebe eventually met up with her half-brother, Frank Junior, who's hobby is melting things. Just when you think things couldn't get much more complicated, Phoebe finds out that her mother's best friend - called 'Phoebe' - is actually her real mother! And you thought your life was complicated!
